The Administrative Tribunals Act, 1985 was passed by the Indian Parliament in compliance with Article 323A of the Indian Constitution. On April 22, 1988, the Central Government published a Government Gazette announcing the creation of a State Administrative Tribunal for the State of Maharashtra. On the same foundation, the Maharashtra Administrative Tribunal was created on July 8th, 1991. The Maharashtra Administrative Tribunal's Principal Bench is located in Mumbai, and its Benches are in Nagpur and Aurangabad.

The primary goal of the formation of this Tribunal is to offer a prompt and effective redress to all of the roughly five lakh employees of the Maharashtra government. This Tribunal has all the authority of the High Court with regard to all service disputes involving government employees of the State of Maharashtra, as stated in Section 15 of the Administrative Tribunals Act of 1985. According to Section 17 of the Contempt of Court Act, 1971, which is exercisable by the High Court, this Tribunal has been given the authority to take contempt actions.
